Rudhran Movie Synopsis: Can an IT professional overcome personal losses and defeat a notorious gangster who targets his family's property?
Rudhran Movie Review:
While some films leave us awestruck with their innovative plotlines, others fail to bring anything new to the table. Rudhran falls into the latter category. It's a formulaic action entertainer that adheres to the genre's typical conventions. While the film may somewhat satisfy fans of this genre, given that it has elements of romance, revenge, comedy, and emotion, those seeking something novel will be left disappointed.
In the opening scene, we're introduced to Rudhran, who is fiercely pursuing one of notorious gangster Boomi's (Sarath Kumar) henchmen. As the film progresses, we're taken back in time to see Rudhran working as an IT professional. He leads a happy life with his father (Nassar), who owns a transport agency, and mother (Poornima Bhagyaraj), a homemaker. Meanwhile, Rudhran meets Ananya (Priya Bhavani Shankar), a lab technician at a private hospital, and falls in love with her.
However, Rudhran's father's sudden death and mounting debts force him to take a job abroad. He marries Ananya and travels alone to solve their financial problems. Little does he know that Boomi, a criminal who targets families of men who've settled abroad for money, will make his life miserable.
The plot of a man seeking revenge for his loved ones' deaths was the premise of many commercial masala films we witnessed decades ago. Rudhran follows the same formula, and most sequences are predictable. In one scene, a character in the film narrates Rudhran's plight to a group of youngsters, explaining why he's on a killing spree. However, the writing fails to resonate with viewers, and most emotions feel forced.
There's nothing original in the film except Boomi's backstory and rise as a gangster, which is quite engaging. However, the action sequences between Boomi and Rudhran are lengthy and make us wish for them to end sooner. Although the staging is decent, the jarring background score and over-the-top punch dialogues put us in a grim situation. The romantic sequences are well-executed, though a couple of songs in the second half could have been avoided.
The performances of Raghava Lawrence, Sarath Kumar, and Priya Bhavani Shankar are decent and if the film's runtime was shorter, things might have been better. The director hints at a sequel in the end, which doesn't seem to be a wise decision.
Rudhran is just another rehash of many action entertainers in Tamil cinema.
